Domingo por San Telmo / San Telmo on Sunday

Sunday, a few minutes after midday, I found myself strolling around San Telmo. The heat of the month of October is starting to heat the streets. The sun takes no prisoners, but everyone is taking their chances under the rays to get outdoors. Hordes of people that take to the streets. It´s practically impossible to cross Defensa street. And still, with the heat from the sun and the human heat, it´s worth withstanding to be able to get lost in the heart of San Telmo, one of the most antique neighbourhoods in the city of Buenos Aires.

The "Defensa Alley" is located on Defensa 1179 in the very heart of San Telmo. It used to be the house of a traditional family in Buenos Aires: the Ezeiza family. It was your typical 1880´s colonial style house, with two floors and various internal courtyards, around which all of the rooms can be found. It was built in 1876, but shortly after its construction the Ezeiza´s left the house, which then became a primary school, and the venue for the National Institution for the deaf and mute, and finally became a "conventillo" where over 30 families lived. Today it is an antique´s gallery and it has a couple of bars and cafes on the top floor.

El Mercado / The Market

"El Mercado", is an old market on Vicente Lopez 1652, which opened in 1900. It no longer works as a market, but in the past this used to be one of the many markets which served as a meeting place for the city of Buenos Aires.  A truly neuralgic spot in the city. As years passed by the markets changed.. Some of them remain working as proper markets, such as the Mercado del Progreso in Caballito and the Mercado San Telmo, but many others disappeared. The "El Mercado", fortunately, has been preserved by a law recently passed by the local Buenos Aires government. The original structure is to be maintained and unchanged.
