Arte Callejero IV / Street Art IV

I guess it is a recurring theme on this blog: Street Art. I find that what is so interesting about this, is the fact that whilst so many things remain unchanged and stagnant in the city of Buenos Aires, its street art changes constantly, mutates and adapts all of the time. One can wake up to find a completely new vision of the streets and walls of the city, with the personal touch and vision of its artists. Here I leave you with another sample of the creations I´ve recently stumbled upon in my walks through the city.

Facultad de Ingenieria / Faculty of Engineering

The building of the Engineering Faculty of the University of Buenos Aires, is also known as "The Cathedral", due to its Gothic or Neo Gothic architectural style (which of these two styles the building complies with is something that exceeds my limited architectural knowledge, and it's a debate I will leave for someone more qualified in the subject).
The original idea was to build a new building for the Law Faculty. The proyect began in 1909, under the design of Uruguayan architect Arturo Prins. Construction actually dragged on for many years. The foundation stone was placed in 1912. With various different stages of the building still unfinished, construction came to a halt in 1938, mainly due to a budget deficit. Its only in 1948 that the building is given to the Faculty of Engineering as one of its own campus buildings.
There is a legend surrounding the building and its architect. It was rumoured for some time that Prins found a flaw in his design which meant that if completed, the structure would collapse. This led to his suicide, in his office, over the original plans of the building. This of course never happened, although a lot of people, for a long time thought this to be true.

El Obelisco / The Obelisk

The Obelisk stands like an icon of the city of Buenos Aires.  One of those "must see" sights, and a classic postcard of the city. It was built in 1936 to celebrate the 400 years of the foundation of the city. It stand in the Plaza de la República, in the intersection of Avenida 9 de Julio and Avenida Corrientes. In the very same spot where it is built, back in 1812, the Argentine flag was raised for the first time. It only took 31 days to build. In charge of the project was the German group Siemens Bauunion - Grun & Bilfinger. The building{s design was in charge of architect Alberto Prebisch. It stands at nearly 68 metres high, which can be reached after a flight of 206 steps. The building has no elevator.
A few years after the construction was completed, a municipal disposition ordered the demolishment of the obelisk, due to safety, economic and aesthetic reasons. Fortunately this disposition was vetoed by the executive municipal authorities, and the demolishment did not happen.

It was Saturday evening when I bumped into the classic cars of the Ferrero Trotti, Ford T Foundation, all lined up along Avenida de Mayo. All of them in mint condition, with their proud owners close by, showing them off. A small trip into the past.
