The City of Buenos Aires, or the Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires, is the capital city of Argentina, since the year 1880.

With an estimated (2010 Census) population of 2,891,082 in the city and a population of 12,801,364 in its urban surroundings, known as Gran Buenos Aires. This makes Buenos Aires the largest urban city in Argentina, the second in magnitude in South America and puts the city within the top 20 cities with the highest populations in the world. The city is divided into 48 different neighborhoods and 15 different "comunas" (administrative subdivision).

It has an extension of 202 Km2 and a population density of 14,312 people per Km2.

The city itself was established twice, in the years 1536 and 1580. The first foundation of the city was done by Pedro de Mendoza, but the city was abandoned and destroyed shortly, in the year 1541, due to the constant attacks from the native population. The first short story of Manuel Mujica Lainez´s work on the city of Buenos Aires, from which the name of this blog was taken, deals with the constant famine problems which were suffered by the first inhabitants of the city.  The second and definite foundation was done by Juan de Garay. During both of these, the city was under the control of the Virreinato del Perú, of the Spanish Empire. It is curious anyway that the city was offcially named the ¨City of the Trinity¨, and not as Buenos Aires! Nevertheless this is how it was always known because of the name of its port which was ¨Santa María de los Buenos Ayres¨.

By 1776, the city is established as the capital of the newly created Virreinato del Río de la Plata. In 1806, due to the British Invasion, the city remained for a couple of months under British control. In 1810 the Revolución de Mayo ocurrs, and the Spanish Viceroy is expelled, and finally on the 9th of July 1816, definite independence from the Spanish Empire is declared. This would then become, officially the beginning of Argentine history.

Buenos Aires is the most visited city by international tourism in the whole of Latin America. It is alongside the cities of Sao Paolo and Mexico D.F., one of the three Latin American cities categorized as an Alpha city by the GaWC recent study.
