Mercado de Abasto / Abasto Market

El edificio del Mercado de Abasto proveedor fue terminado el 1 de Abril de 1893. Funcionó como un mercado proveedor de frutas y verduras, hasta el año 1984. Fue creciendo y expandiéndose. Se instalaron un frigorífico, una fábrica de hielo y nuevos pabellones. Su actual fachada fue completada en 1934. Cuando finalmente se dispuso su cierre se trasladó al Mercado Central de Buenos Aires. El crecimiento exponencial que sufrió la ciudad a partir de la década del 30, significó que la misma ya no podía tolerar el tráfico y la actividad mayorista que traía aparejada la ubicación del mercado. Fue su crecimiento orgánico lo que dispuso la necesidad de re localizar sus funciones.

El edificio fue comprado por George Soros en la década de los 90 y fue convertido en un Centro Comercial en el año 1998. Por suerte conservando su fachada y por lo menos desde afuera, sin poner en peligro su encanto.

The building of the Abasto Market was completed on April 1st 1893. It served as a central market providing fruit and vegetables, up until 1984. It grew and expanded. A meat packing depot was opened, alongside an ice fabric and new depot areas. Its current facade was completed in 1934. When it finally closed down, its functions were moved to the current "Mercado Central" of Buenos Aires.The exponential growth that the city experienced from the 30s onwards, meant that the location for the market became an issue. This created traffic and logistic problems due to the activity of a wholesale market in the heart of the city. Sooner or later the market had to be moved.

The building was purchased by George Soros in the 90s and turned into a shopping mall in the year 1998. Luckily enough the facade was not modified and it did not lose its architectural attractive (at least from the outside).
