La librería El Ateneo Grand Splendid, sobre la Avenida Santa Fe, a metros de la intersección con la calle Callao, se comenzó a construir en 1917 y fue inaugurada en 1919. En esa época no era una librería sino un teatro-cine, que se construyó sobre los cimientos del antiguo Teatro Nacional Norte. En el año 1923, se instaló una emisora de radio en el predio: Radio Splendid. Solo se convirtió en una libreria en el año 2000. Su encanto radica en gran parte por haber respetado la estructura original. La cúpula se dejo intacta, los balcones son los originales y hasta el telón de terciopelo sigue en su lugar. El espacio donde se encontraba el escenario sirve ahora de confiteria donde se puede tomar algo y sumergirse en algún libro de las estanterias.
La Cúpula fue pintada en 1919, y conmemora el fín de la Primera Guerra Mundial.
Fue votado por el diario Británico "The Guardian", como la segunda libreria más hermosa del mundo.
The "Ateneo Grand Splendid" bookstore, located on Avenida Santa Fe, just a couple of metres off the intersection with Callao street, was opened in 1919. Contruction began 2 years earlier in 1917. When it opened originally it did so as a theater. It was built on the remains of the Teatro Nacional Norte.In 1923 a radio station was establishe din the building: Radio Splendid.
It only became a bookstore in the year 2000. Its charm is given by the fact that it maintained its original structure. The dome and its paintings were maintained, the original balconies are still in place and even the original red velvet curtain is in its place. Where once there was a stage, there is now a cafeteria were one can enjoy a drink whilst diving into any of the books from the store.
The dome painting on the roof was painted in 1919 and represents a celebration of the end of World War One.
An article in the British tabloid "The Guardian", ranked the store as the second most beautiful bookstore in the world.
