Edificio Otto Wulff / Otto Wulff Building

The Otto Wulff building is one of my favourites in Buenos Aires. This of course is an absolutely personal observation. I can´t walk past the building without lifting my head up high and admiring its architecture. It is located in the corner of Avenida Belgrano and Perú.

Construction began in 1912 and the building was completed in 1914. It was built under the auspice of Nicholas Mihanovich and his business partner Otto Wulff. Hence the name by which the building is nowadays known, although it was also known as the "House of the old Viceroy´s wife", as in the first half of the 19th Century, the Spanish Viceroy´s residence used to be there. The building´s first use was as the diplomatic venue for the Austro-Hungarian delegation, until the fall of the Empire with the end of World War I.

The architect of the building was Morten F. Ronnow, from Denmark, following the Jugendstil style (German Art Noveau). He was also the architec tin charge of the building of the Danish Church in San Telmo. What really strikes are the eight Atlas who appear to be holdings the building on their backs. Each has a different face which correspond to the workers who were involved in the building, including its architect.

The Bicenntenial Museum was opened very recently. On the 24th of May 2011 it opened its doors, as part of the celebrations of the 200 years of the May Revolution 1810 and the first steps taken in the long road towards independence from Spanish rule. The museum is in the location where the Fort of Buenos Aires and then subsequently the Taylor Customs Building stood. It can be found just metres away from the House of Government, the Casa Rosada.

The Museum shows the last 200 years of Argentine history (1810 - 2010). It opens from Wednesday thorugh to Sundays, and during all bank holidays, from 10:00 till 18:00 hs (these times correspond to April - November). It has a permanent collection as well as temporary thematic collections which are included from time to time. The audio visual material is the most interesting, and will allow the visitor, in about one hour, to get a short but concise overview of the historic trends and main landmarks of Argentine history. These are complemented with different archealogical and historic items. It would appear to be quite a modern museum. There is a coffee shop and restaurant where visitors can just relax and enjoy the scene while having a drink or something to bite into.
